« on: May 13, 2008, 09:35:04 PM »

I'm making a business plan to further my studio. I have stretched my budget as far as it will go now I need to look elsewhere for financing! So I'm just researching to get a more crystallized version of what I'm going for. Thanks in advance for answering my questions!!

1. What is the deciding factor when you choose a studio?
a)ambience
b)expensive gear
c)experience
d)price
e)the technician's people skills
f)other___________

2. Which of these above choices matter the least to you?

3. How much would you expect an album to cost (recording, mixing)?

4. Do you prefer to have your album recorded and mixed by the same person?

5. Within reason, what could a studio offer you to show they're willing to go the extra mile?

6. What kind of music do you do or listen to?

Responses can be sent to muffinsandcheese@hotmail.com.  I really appreciate your input!

1. What is the deciding factor when you choose a studio? I think each of those points are important except for my answer to your second question
a)ambience
b)expensive gear
c)experience
d)price
e)the technician's people skills
f)other___________

2. Which of these above choices matter the least to you? expensive gear

3. How much would you expect an album to cost (recording, mixing)? no idea really

4. Do you prefer to have your album recorded and mixed by the same person? it may be a nice thing depending on the skills. but it may be good too to have someone else bringing some ideas for the mix

5. Within reason, what could a studio offer you to show they're willing to go the extra mile? it could offer some contacts with people in the music biz

6. What kind of music do you do or listen to? mostly rock and metal

It's not how big and expensive your TOOL is, but how you use it........TRUE.

It IS important that the musicians feel good and comfy where they are.

And good ears HELPS alot.
Don't tell them what to do, but "suggest"

Price? Oh yeah......that's the 1st question I get asked.....
I myself range from $100.00 to $5000.00 per song. Depends what you're looking for. Am i just pressing the record button, or Producing & Mixing and Mastering.
Sometimes I don't charge at all.

Be HONEST and straight forward at All times.

Most Important to me as an X-Musician turned producer....... is I do this because I LOVE MUSIC.

There's no such thing as a "Stupid Question".
Fire away..........

1. What is the deciding factor when you choose a studio?

d)price
When you have a very limited budget...isn't it what everyone looks for at first? cmon don't cheat

2. Which of these above choices matter the least to you?
expensive gear really. the good ambiance isn't a MUST but it helps. Atleast don't rush the band, thats all, otherwise it just turns awful

3. How much would you expect an album to cost (recording, mixing)?
I don't know...I'm not the business-head around here

4. Do you prefer to have your album recorded and mixed by the same person?
Yes, because as the person records the band they learn about the style they want, the personnality they have, etc.

5. Within reason, what could a studio offer you to show they're willing to go the extra mile?
A free try (like, one song) and/or some contacts if they like the band

6. What kind of music do you do or listen to?
Alternative and Post-Punk.

For mixing I prefer to take it to a studio where it was not recorded. By the same person depends on whether or not I like this person's style (everyone has a style.) There is one recording we did, engineered by someone else; the recording was good but I really disliked the cheesy movie reverb he added to my trumpet track on the mix, so I remixed it myself at home (but the recording itself WAS GOOD.)

1. What is the deciding factor when you choose a studio?
a)ambience

I've paid a crapload of money for an awesome sounding record that felt like shit and I've paid dirt cheap rates at a low brow hole of a studio that fit like an old shoe and recorded the band live off the floor for our tightest sounding record ever. If the place isn't comfortable, how are you expected to be at your best?

2. Which of these above choices matter the least to you?
Expensive gear matters the least, but let's not take this to the extreme. With the multitude of choices out there, you cannot go cheap on your gear and expect to attract clients.

3. How much would you expect an album to cost (recording, mixing)?
Depends on a whole lot of factors, from number of instruments to the extensiveness of the mixing. Best solution: Negotiated Project Rates.

4. Do you prefer to have your album recorded and mixed by the same person?
If I've felt comfortable with the person that I recorded with, then by all means, he's welcome to give it a go. But I'm the hands-on type and I intend to direct him as to what we're trying to do as a band. If it sucks, I'll redo it myself or take it elsewhere.

5. Within reason, what could a studio offer you to show they're willing to go the extra mile?
Contacts, Discount Duplication, free mastering, referral discounts

6. What kind of music do you do or listen to?
Funk, Soul, Rock, Country, Hip Hop, Reggae

If the song sucks the studio makes no difference:
