What a great weekend for music in Montreal!
The bands in Montreal have been very top rate lately. It has been quite easy to find something that I like. Sometimes, they are great musicians, sometimes they have a sexy look, and sometimes… well sometimes I’m just happy that I didn’t have to pay to get in.
All props go out to MMS Editor in Chief, Jennifer, for asking me to review the band that I saw on Friday, April 10, 2006. Astra Heights was simply brilliant! With a rare combination of power, grace and charm, Astra Heights completely dominated the show. With sweeping melodies, driving rhythms, and tight harmonies, we were taken on a musical odyssey. I even found myself complementing the lighting tech for a job well done!
A little history; Astra Heights are a group of three musical brothers and one fantastic addition who originally hail from Texas (you can even hear a little Stevie Ray Vaughn in the grooves). A short stay in Los Angeles found Astra Heights finishing the recording of their freshman CD for Universal records. Currently, they can be found on tour with Nightmare of You and She Wants Revenge. Their bio mentions influences such as The Beatles and Queen but personally, I feel like they sound like a high-energy mix of The Smiths, Radiohead, and Rolling Stones. A fantastic combination!
I anticipate Montreal will see Astra Heights come round again for their debut album with David Kahne (Strokes, Paul McCartney, Sublime etc.) which will be released before the end of the year.
