The FREAKS come out at night!

Don’t believe me? Then check out FREAKENCY the next chance you get. If you’re a fan of Goth and are sick of the wannabes out there, then you won’t regret it. I give you my word.

I had the absolute pleasure of catching this masterpiece of gothic entertainment late last year and they have definitely caught my attention. For someone that isn’t a huge fan of the style, I was instantly captivated by a performance that can be described as no less than magnificently evil.

The band sounds like something you’d hear at the Haunted House or in a classic style horror flic backed by an electronica/speed metal beat by MMS’s own Frak. As hard as it is to describe what I saw and heard, I will do my best to draw you a picture. Let’s start with their look. Costumes play a big role in their presentation and they do a great job at making you think that they come straight from a freak show (in a tasteful, stylish way of course). The drums lay down a very modern back-end as it is performed mostly on an electronic kit. The guitar and the bass (Gilles and Dave) make sure that you’re hypnotized by their ambient effects and make you wonder what instruments are being used at some points throughout the night. Female vocalist, FreakyNat, leads the voice of the band with an eerie sound of agony as she pours out all the energy and emotion needed to supply a much-noticed presence on stage.

I won’t pretend to be an award-winning novelist. You have to see them live to fully grasp the reality of a band this off-the-wall. All I can say is, they’ve done their homework and they know exactly what they’re doing. Perhaps the pictures below and a few clicks on their website will shed some light for you. For those of you who don’t know him, Frak is also well known as being one of the most eccentric web designers in town. In fact, his work is so far fetched that he was invited for an interview live on CISM 89.3 French Radio. Let’s just say that his work enticed the host to use profanity (as it is the only real way) to describe the experience.

Do the Freaks really come out at night? Well, that depends on what time their show starts.

You can catch them next at L’Alizé on February 7th, 2004 @ 10:30pm.

Good luck and much love.
