Last Call @ Café Campus, October 9th 2003

review by Psyko

The turn out at Café Campus was just perfect. It wasn’t too stuffy in there I don’t think there were any empty tables anywhere. There was a cool duo set, of an acoustic guitarist (and back up vocalist) with Impaired Mind’s old manager, singing. They set the mood just right and brought back some good ol’ memories, and their voices were well harmonized and I was actually quite impressed with their work!

Last Call hit the stage, Ryan on guitars and lead vocals, Matthew on bass and Tristan on the drums. The songs were catchy, cute, well-written and definitely fun to listen to. They’ve gotten together 6 months ago and are already pumped and eager to hit stages all over Montreal, and they should be! Impaired Mind loved having them play for them, and the crowd enjoyed the catchy rock tunes. Most songs, as Ryan told me before the show, revolve around what goes on in young adults’ minds, girls, love and sex. Ryan also told me that he came up with the name “Last Call”, and also… added that he likes to drink. I had to ask him if he knew he was hot (and ladies, he f****** is!). He said “I do now, lol, ‘we can do it my way, your way, we can do it all night long!!!’” as he quoted off one of his songs. I don’t usually like princesses and pink glitter, but his song “You are a Princess” actually made me all giddy inside, too cute! Then I heard “Rock and Roll girl” and knew then that the princess giddiness was accidental, it’s “Rock and Roll girl” I should be giddy about! Ryan, you saved the day!

These guys are open minded and are always up for having some fun and playing with new bands.

Interview:

Psyko: The first song you performed was ‘You Sexy Little Thing’, which was quite perverted and dirty (I loved it!). How much do you love sex and do you think it should be given much importance in music?
Ryan: I wouldn’t be able to live without sex, I need it. And yes, it should be given importance, it is how humans are created. I write songs based on what goes through my head, and I think about sex a lot more than I think about love.

Psyko: You’ve done theatre in the past, what made you focus on your music instead?
Ryan: Theatre involves a lot of musical aspects… ok, theatre sucked. Music is in me and I have to let it out. I can express myself more through music.

Psyko: Outta curiosity, what kinda stickers you got on your guitar?
Ryan: These are old stickers. My guitar is old but I am so used to the feel. These stickers are from about 8 years ago when I first started playing, and then along the way. I got Operation Ivy, Ramones, Social Distortion, a Canada flag, Ripchordz (played a couple shows when them when I was like 14-15), Exploited, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and a couple more on the back.

Psyko: What do you think is the most exciting part of being in a band?
Ryan: I got to give it to live shows for sure. There’s no feeling like it. I do love the writing part. When I make a song that sticks, it gets me all tingly. HAHAHA! I LOVE SEX!

(I have to restrain myself at this point from jumping this guy).

Psyko: What would you like to see happen in your music career? What are your goals?
Ryan: I want to be playing forever. I’d like to tour someday, play in Europe for sure. I’d like to live off being a musician. You’re told in life to do what you love, and I love music… and sex.

Psyko: Any particular band you would like to open for?
Ryan: I would love to have opened for Guns and f****** Roses, maybe AC/DC. Actually I would love to be involved in a show with Sublime. The original Sublime, Bradely Knowell and company.

Psyko: So how was your experience in a hard core punk band, and now being in a rock band?
Ryan: I must say very different. With punk, you can’t exactly play any venue there is. The energy is different on stage. The singing is what made me lean away from it. I enjoy more melodic singing. I like what I do now a lot better. Although I will never forget the fucked up days. WAIT… I’m still f***** up!

Good luck you guys and I hope that everything turns out well with your plans, keep us all posted on what’s happening and of any new website! Thanks for a cool night! J
