face="Arial"> <p>Walking into the Olympia theatre halfway through Our Lady Peace s first of two nights was like an instant time warp. Having only finished work at 8pm, when the show officially started, I had missed the first six tracks (and in my opinion, the best) of the <i>Clumsy album</i>, which felt unsatisfying to a fan forged out of the notoriously heavy <i>Naveed</i> (1994). The first time I heard that album, I instantly noted Jeremy Taggart as one of the most underrated drummers of the 90 s. This time though, he was either having an off-night or the gaggle of girls in the crowd, classy yet provocative (as Montreal s female population usually is at concerts), surely caused some distraction. <p>Peeking at the merch table upon my entrance, I heard the recognizable piano intro to the album s title-track and scurried towards the sound of roaring fans. By the time I stepped through the entrance to the main floor of the theatre, the sold out crowd had taken their own instructions from front man Raine Maida s lyrics as he backed away from the mic to let them sing,  I ll be waving my hand.. <p>Hearing OLP continue into  Hello Oskar ,  Let You Down ,  The Story of 100 Aisles and  Car Crash brought back memories of my first lessons in life. This was the night they played <i>Clumsy</i> (1997) front-to-back. The most successful Our Lady Peace album to date and one that was released in the year I graduated from high school. In the years that followed, this CD sat in my car and saw me live through relationships, breakups, family arguments, back seat action and college woes. Anytime I wanted to get away from the tumultuous life of a teenager trying to become an adult.. <i>Clumsy</i> was there. <p>Still, my first reaction to the band s performance was one of disappointment. The setup was as standard as they come for a venue of its size. A giant screen filled the wall behind Taggart displaying scenes of rural Canada, carnivals and of course the OLP s official spokesman (and the old man on most of their album covers), Saul Fox. Raine stood still, wrapped around his mic stand with his eyes closed throughout almost every song. Guitarist Steve Mazur impressively hit every note on an album he had no part in, having only joined OLP after original axe man Mike Turner left in 2001, but there was very little movement or  performance coming from Mazur or the rest of the band. It felt depressing.. which was kind of the sonic and lyrical vibe of the album in the first place. As I realized this, I noticed that everything from their composure to the images on screen and even the old-school fixed stage lighting were all deliberately there to help recreate the feeling of the album itself. <p>Intermission. <p>I spoke to Maida earlier that day, who said,  ..every fan who comes to the show will feel like they re seeing two completely different Our Lady Peace concerts in one night. <p>He wasn t joking either. To my satisfaction this time, the band exploded with energy and stage presence, interacting with the crowd and blasting out one single after another.  One Man Army ,  Innocent ,  Life ,  Right Behind You ,  Somewhere Out There and  Starseed .. finally wrapping up the over-an-hour set with their new single,  All You Did Was Save My Life. Halfway through their latest crowd-pleaser, Maida jumped down from the stage with his handy cam and walked to the back of the room and out the door. He had come down into the crowd a few times throughout the second part of the show, but this time he was headed up the stairs to the upper left balcony. Perched on the edge of the balcony s front row, the singer panned the crowd with his video camera, taking a piece of the Olympia crowd home with him before screaming into the last chorus of the song with no more than an ankle-high railing stopping him from plunging into the seats below. <p>It wasn t until the encore that Duncan Coutts (whose late mother Mary was immortalized in OLP s latest album <i>Burn Burn</i> (2009), dedicated in her memory) took the spotlight, booming into the bass line for  Naveed with Taggart at his heels. The crowd had reached a state of musical climax, swaying, jumping, singing and dancing to the familiar classic.
