With
a growing resurgence of 80’s inspired music, many
rock bands are trying to cash in on the fad, with no
avail, but Montreal’s own Steem are sure to beat
the odds. These young guys have only been together for
four years, but they play with experience beyond their
ages, and careers.
Reaching
the Emergenza Festival finals at the Medley June 26th
Steem put on an unbelievable performance. Screaming
fans holding banners, glow sticks and flags, Steem was
fueled by the energy of the crowd as they played to
please.
Frontman David Vespoli, clad in typical rock band style
of jeans and a cut off plaid top, played the keyboard
while belting out Steem’s catchy, but not at all
cheesy lyrics, with a voice that would make Sammy Hagar
jealous in his prime. Guitarist Alex Romanello played
amazingly as he even decided to show off his ability
to play backwards. Steve Campoli, bassist, was just
as energized as the rest of the group. He plays the
bass like Kiss’s Gene Simmons but without all
the messy makeup. Drummer Jonathan Granata plays the
drums with fury and enough animation to be the center
of attention, proving the comfort with his talent.
Although
Steem’s sound explodes with remnants of 80’s
bands such as Def Leopard, Boston and yes, some Bon
Jovi, they manage to create a sound that is all Steem’s
own. Borrowing from the grandfathers of rock to formulate
a modern sound is not an easy task, but these boys have
the right mixture to prove themselves and make their
mark.
Steem
handle the crowd with a presence that is astonishing
for such young musicians. With their reassurance of
performing on stage, combined with their talent and
enthusiasm, it is no surprise that Steem made it to
the Emergenza finals.
Although
Pete Moss took first place at the Emergenza Festival,
Steem can and will become a real threat to other 80’s
inspired rock bands, as their determination will go
a long way.
