American singer-songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff has enlisted the help of Kevin Morby and Sam Cohen for a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “There Is A War”.
The track originally appeared on Cohen’s 1974 New Skin for the Old Ceremony album and was released released to coincide with the Watergate scandal.
The Cohen track was covered in support of The Marigold Project, an initiative originally started by Rateliff in support of smaller organizations fighting for racial, social, and economic justice. It is part on an ongoing series featuring different guest artists covering a variety of songs.
In an online statement, Rateliff said, “I really love the work that Sam and Kevin have done together in the past. So I asked them to be a part of the Marigold Singles. We all have a mutual love for Leonard Cohen’s writing and felt that ‘There Is A War’ speaks to the world we currently find ourselves in.”
Rateliff’s collaborative cover of “There Is A War” is expected to be available for purchase on a 7″ starting in early 2022 on the musician’s web store. Proceeds will benefit The Highlander Research and Education Center.
