West Island’s Pioneer set to be demolished this week

Legendary West Island venue, The Pioneer will officially start being knocked down this week.

The venue has been sitting empty since closing in 2018 and the property has since been purchased by condo developers.

Initially, the latter announcement was met with its fair share of opponents including a Facebook campaign and a court case in 2019 spearheaded by local residents. The court, however, ruled in favour of the City of Pointe-Claire and the developer.

Although the project has fallen behind because of the pandemic, according to city documents, the demolition will occur this week and is set to last for approximately a month. The final project will include 14 condos and a handful of commercial spaces.

The Pioneer is located at 286 Lakeshore Road and the building that housed the venue is estimated to be 119 years old. Recent archaeological digs revealed that the site was potentially home to stables at some point.
